Virginia University of Lynchburg’s standout point guard, Jacob Newman, is back for his second season, bringing momentum from a record-breaking debut year that earned him a spot on the NCCAA Men’s All-South Region First Team—a rare honor for a first-year player at VUL, and the first in five years to achieve it. 

Newman’s selection was unanimous, a testament to his dominance on the court. He averaged 28 points per game against South Region opponents, with standout performances including 60 points across two games against rival Paine College and 59 points in two matchups with Clinton College. Even against Division I competition, Newman held his own, averaging 15 points per game. 

Over the season, he posted an average of 18 points per game, totaling 286 points, and logged 33.2 minutes per game. His season highlights included 22 points against Radford University and a 29-point explosion at Paine College’s Homecoming. He finished as the 13th leading scorer in the NCCAA, placing him among the top 25 nationally. 

Newman also led the conference in?free-throw attempts on four occasions: 

• Nov 23, 2024: Ranked #8 in NCCAA with 16 attempts vs. Livingston College 

• Jan 14, 2025: 15 attempts vs. Paine College 

• Jan 25, 2025: Perfect 100% field goal percentage vs. Clinton College 

• Feb 26, 2025: Ranked #2 in NCCAA with 18 attempts vs. Clinton College 

But Jacob Newman isn’t just a basketball star—he’s a dual-sport athlete and a team captain of the VUL football team. Before transferring to VUL, he played football at Johnson C. Smith University, where he earned All-CIAA honors.  

A highly recruited multi-sport athlete out of high school, Jacob Newman drew significant interest from Division I programs in both football and basketball. He received multiple football scholarship offers and was also pursued by college basketball programs, showcasing his elite talent in both sports. His athletic excellence earned him a 4th-place finish in the prestigious Mr. North Carolina Football rankings. 

With his leadership, athleticism, and relentless drive, Jacob Newman is poised to elevate the Dragons to new heights this season—on both the court and the field.
