September 29th: A Legendary Night for the Dragons
In one of the most thrilling matchups in recent memory, the Dragons roared back from a 21-point deficit to snatch a heart-pounding 43-42 victory over the Bluefield State Rams in Bluefield, WV. Down 28-7 in the first half, the Dragons refused to fold, unleashing a comeback for the ages.
Just before halftime, Max Zavala launched a perfect 32-yard strike to Demetris McKelvy, igniting the rally and cutting the lead to 28-14. By the end of the third quarter, the Dragons had clawed their way back to 28-35, setting the stage for a wild finish.
Then came the storm—literally. A 2 hour and 57-minute lightning delay couldn’t dim the Dragons’ fire. When play resumed, the defense came out swinging. On a critical 4th down, Kavon Gregory made a game-changing block on a Rams field goal attempt. Gary Zanders scooped it up and sprinted to the Rams’ 42-yard line, flipping momentum in dramatic fashion.
From there, Jacob Newman electrified the crowd with a powerful run to the 5-yard line. Moments later, Zavala connected with Montrell Wright from the 1-yard line to tie the game at 42. But Coach Newman wasn’t playing for overtime—he was playing to win.
With 1:38 left, the Dragons went for two. Jacob Newman bulldozed his way into the end zone, putting the Dragons ahead 43-42. The Rams had one last chance, driving to their own 41 before launching a desperate pass to the end zone—but the Dragons' defense stood tall, swatting it away and sealing the victory.
Max Zavala played with the poise of a seasoned veteran, not a freshman, leading the charge with confidence and grit. The receiving corps—Justin Placide, Montrell Wright, Demetris McKelvy, and Ry'Carri Dailey—delivered clutch performances all night. The Newman brothers, Tim and Jacob, were relentless in running the ball all night long.
Defensively, Kavon Gregory, Dee'Shari Keith, and Christian Wilson were standouts, anchoring a unit that refused to break.
This was more than a win—it was a statement. The Dragons showed resilience, heart, and championship spirit, improving their record to 2-3.
Now, the Dragons return home to Lynchburg City Stadium for Homecoming on Thursday, October 2nd at 7:00 PM. Expect fireworks, energy, and special guests Boots on the Ground and the "Ambassadors of Sound" from Virginia Union University.
Don’t miss it. The Dragons are just getting started.
