The Dragons Are Ready to Compete

The Dragons are gearing up for what may be the most challenging—and electrifying—schedule in program history. The 2026 slate features an eye-opening five Division I matchups, a true testament to the fearless vision and competitive drive of Coach Newman. Since his arrival, the Dragons have embraced the grind, taking on 33 Division I opponents from 2021–2026—cementing their reputation as one of the most battle-tested Division II programs in the nation.

The season kicks off in dramatic fashion on August 29, as the Dragons clash with Division I Hampton University. From there, the road only gets tougher, with a trip to face Morgan State, followed by back-to-back showdowns against Bethune-Cookman and Norfolk State in Northern Virginia. The challenge continues as the Dragons head to Chicago to take on Chicago State, led by former Virginia University of Lynchburg head coach Bobby Rome.

But the intensity doesn’t stop there.

Rivalry sparks will fly once again against Roanoke College after last year’s hard-fought battle that came down to the wire. On Halloween, the Dragons will square off against the Livingstone Blue Bears in a matchup sure to bring energy and excitement. Fans will also remember last season’s instant classic against Bluefield University—a 43-42 thriller sealed by Jacob Newman’s dramatic 2-yard, 2 point conversion run—and anticipation will be high for the rematch.

The Dragons will also travel south to face Savannah State, looking to avenge a 28-14 loss from three seasons ago.

This is more than a schedule—it’s a statement. The Dragons are ready to compete, ready to battle, and ready to prove they belong on the biggest stage.
